When the 19th Amendment was ratified 100 years ago, it granted all women the right to vote — in theory. In reality, most Black women didn’t gain suffrage until the Voting Rights Act of 1965; during the intervening 45 years, they were stymied by poll taxes, literacy tests and other racist measures.

Dear Students,

Welcome to the Fall 2020 semester!  This academic year marks the 50th anniversary of HUNAP.  In the Fall of 1970, eleven Native American students began their courses at the Harvard Graduate School of Education as part of the newly created American Indian Program (AIP).  Since then, the program and our community has grown to encompass every school at Harvard and an ever growing global alumni network of over 1300 individuals.  We are delighted to welcome new students to this community and welcome back our returning students....
