A Dutch visitor to the College wrote in 1680 that “We found there eight or ten young fellows, sitting around, smoking tobacco, with the smoke of which the room was so full, that you could hardly see.” A new article by Peabody Museum Senior Curator and Anthropology Lecturer Diana Loren explores the material remains of this forbidden practice - broken pipes and pipe stems from the excavations in Harvard Yard - and what they can tell us about sensory experience in the College's early days.
